A Tasty Summer Breeze Ushering in Goodness in the Edible Garden

Blueberry Basil Salad

Blueberry Basil Salad | Fresh from the Edible Garden at Atlanta Botanical Garden

There is something magical about cooking with ingredients at the height of their season. This past weekend in the Edible Garden Outdoor Kitchen at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, we celebrated one of summer’s sweetest harvests with a vibrant Blueberry Basil Salad featuring creamy goat cheese and toasted pecans.

As we walked through the garden, the plantings were thriving in the warm Georgia sunshine after days of rain, filling the air with fresh fragrances. Nearby, blueberries were beginning to ripen, providing the perfect inspiration for a salad that showcases the beauty of simple, fresh ingredients.

This salad is a reminder that great flavor doesn’t require complicated recipes. Sweet, juicy blueberries pair beautifully with peppery arugula, while fresh basil adds an unexpected layer of brightness. Creamy goat cheese brings richness, and toasted pecans contribute a satisfying crunch and a touch of Southern hospitality.

Healthy Lifestyle Ingredients

What I love most about this recipe is how it encourages us to think beyond traditional uses for herbs. Basil isn’t just for pasta or pesto—it can transform even a salad. Adding fresh herbs gives your dish complexity that elevates every bite. The easy, breezy lemon honey vinaigrette can be made in a snap. I start with ingredients I already have on hand, including Georgia’s own Fresh Press Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Beyond its wonderful flavor, this salad is packed with ingredients that support a healthy lifestyle. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants, basil contains beneficial plant compounds, and pecans provide heart-healthy fats. Together, they create a colorful dish that nourishes both body and spirit. The combination of sweet berries, fragrant herbs, creamy cheese, and crunchy nuts often surprises people, and that element of discovery is one of the joys of summer seasonal cooking.

As summer continues and gardens across Georgia begin producing their bounty, I encourage you to experiment with fresh herbs and seasonal fruit in your own kitchen. Sometimes the most memorable dishes come from pairing ingredients you may not have thought to combine.

Whether you’re harvesting basil from your backyard, picking up blueberries at your local farmers’ market, or simply looking for a fresh addition to your summer table, this Blueberry Basil Salad is a delicious way to celebrate the season.

Here’s to eating with the seasons, enjoying the garden’s abundance while discovering new flavors along the way.

Happy cooking!
